Essentials of Getting Dressed #05: Cultivating Your Activewear
Labor Day sales, brand recommendations and styling tips to make your activewear shopping easeful and enjoyable.
You know that feeling when you’re getting dressed to be active, and then the activewear feels so uncomfortable it crushes your spirit before you’ve even begun to move your body? On the days I have felt this way, exercise seemed more like a punishment than a way to nourish my health and wellbeing.
Fortunately, building an activewear collection you are actually excited to move in starts with keeping styles simple and emphasizing your own comfort.

Athletic performance apparel brand 2XU is known for training and recovery-specific compression activewear:
Above, in 2XU compression tights and long-sleeve shirt, New Balance sneakers, Bombas socks, Able hoop earrings and ivy ring.
Their hi-rise compression tights hug in all the right places and feature several pockets. When I have these on it almost feels like I am not wearing any pants…they truly compress my entire lower half. Note: These are definitely performance bottoms and would not necessarily work in everyday outfits one would style with black leggings. I wear these for high-intensity workouts.

Founded in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, outdoor gear and apparel brand Fjällräven uses minimal and practical styles that make nature more accessible.
Fjällräven lite fleece half zip and hip pack (works as a crossbody!), Uniqlo AIRism biker shorts and Able ivy ring.
"Fjällräven" literally translates to "The mountain fox."
A pop of red/orange turns up the look:
Here, wearing 2XU medium-impact bra and Uniqlo AIRism biker shorts; Swedish flag detail on Fjällräven’s hip pack; New Balance sneakers, Bombas socks, Able hoop earrings and ivy ring.
Wearing all black goes a long way in making activewear more comfortable, but a bright accessory adds the zhuzh. Also, wearing something bright gives you safety points when being active outdoors which is obviously essential. Two birds, one stone!

With that, thank you so much for being here. New York Fashion Week begins this week, so enjoy the long weekend and strap in. Until next time…
