How I Dressed to Meet Vice President Kamala Harris: Travel Recap

A recap of the few days I spent in Washington, D.C. where I had the honor of meeting the Vice President of the United States.

A couple months ago, seemingly out of nowhere, my parents decided to co-host a fundraiser where the Vice President of the United States would be speaking. When I found out family members of the co-hosts were welcome to come along for the ride, I was visibly over the moon.

The next two months were spent in mental and physical preparation for the approximately 30 seconds I’d have to make eye contact with the VP, shake her hand, tell her what a pleasure it was to meet her and have our photo taken. Those few moments happened three days ago, but let’s go back to the beginning of my trip to Washington, D.C. this week.

If you’re on the East Coast you’ve likely experienced the record-breaking heat from the last week or so. I spent the first couple days of my trip forcing myself out the door for fresh sunshine and atmosphere. Despite the truly terrifying driving that occurs in D.C., it is many, many times more wholesome on the streets than in Manhattan.

On Wednesday, I took a stroll to Tatte Bakery & Cafe for an iced chai latte and a box of Nutella cookies to surprise my parents with:

Out and about in a Uniqlo mini T-shirt, Madewell jeans, Rothy’s flats and Ferragamo crossbody bag. I accessorized with Able jewelry and Ray-Ban sunglasses.

Most mornings were spent moving around the nervous and anticipatory energy in my body:

Morning movement wearing Lululemon leggings and New Balance sneakers. I believe the sports bra was purchased at Target like a decade ago…and the water bottle is Larq.

I’ll confess I had no clue what to wear to an outdoor political event in the middle of a heat wave. I oscillated between the classic power-suit look and an edgier, more comfortable summertime appearance.

With the help of my mom (truly, I would have been screwed without her), we landed on this outfit:

I borrowed this embroidered Natural Life dress from my mom and cinched my waist with a studded Scanlan Theodore belt. The Hubolt watch and Eliza J shrug are also borrowed from Mom. Chanel flats, a pearl bracelet and Able rings. I also wore Blue Nile peridot studs (my birth stone) and Tory Burch studs (not pictured).

Later that day, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to guests (mainly to the children in attendance) about topics including choosing supportive friends, being a leader and even what she does on the weekend when she isn’t working.

After her remarks we headed out of the little tent to mingle, refresh and regroup:

Stunning scene at the host’s home. This backyard hill was lethal, but worth it.

My parents and I arrived home for a brief hiatus before venturing back out to New Heights for dinner:

Precious dinner moments:

A fiery yet soothing color scheme in the bathroom.

The next morning I packed up the cat I’m currently caring for and we boarded the Amtrak train back to New York. Once we were back, we completely crashed:

Sleepy girl. Back in New York with Corvallis the calico, who I am currently cat-sitting for my sister!

Arriving home allowed it to sink in just how miraculous the last week has felt. There were two months of mental and physical preparation for a moment that was over in seconds, and every bit of build up was worth it.

With that, thank you so much for being here! Next week I will be back with an extensive guide to styling solid T-shirts, which have completely dominated my wardrobe lately. Until then, stay hydrated in this scorching hot weather.

Yours Truly,

Kyoko
